Things to do in Shrewsbury

Beautiful, heritage town surrounded by glorious countryside and the meandering River Severn

Known for...   River Severn and Shrewsbury Castle

Did you know...

  • Shrewsbury Flower Show is the "Longest Running Horticultural Show in The World", as recently acknowledged by the Guinness Book of Records. Its roots (sorry) go back to 1836 when an event limited to gooseberries and carnations was held; by 1857 it had blossomed (really sorry) further, a town centre marquee in use for a more general show; but what is recognized as the forerunner of the current event was first held in 1875.
  • Shrewsbury has also played a part in Western intellectual history, by being the town in which the naturalist Charles Darwin was born and raised.
  • The town was used as the set for the popular 1984 movie, A Christmas Carol,[69] which filmed many of its interior and exterior shots in and around Shrewsbury. The gravestone prop of Ebenezer Scrooge (played by George C. Scott) that was used in the movie is still present in the graveyard of St. Chad's Church.
