Things to do in Newcastle upon Tyne

Large city with a proud industrial heritage, located on the River Tyne and now undergoing something of a renaissance with a buzzing nightlife. Are you looking for some exciting things to do in Newcastle? We've got plenty of great ideas and suggestions for you across this amazing city.

Newcastle is a thriving, friendly city at the heart of the north-east. The city has undergone a major transformation in the past few decades and what has resulted is one of the most fashionable and fun destinations to visit. The city is fairly compact so do make an effort to explore on foot. Newcastle enjoys some spectacular, contemporary architecture including the Tyne Bridge and the breathtaking Sage building. There are some great museums and a number of fashionable galleries for history buffs and art critics alike.

Newcastle also boasts two world class shopping districts, the city centre itself, home to the famous Fenwicks department store, and the Metro Centre, a purpose built out of town shopping/leisure complex that can be reached on Newcastle's very own Metro train system. On top of this the city boasts some of the best nightlife in the north of the country. There are endless hip bars and trendy clubs to cater for every taste. If you're looking for something a little quieter, Newcastle has an excellent theatre and some world class restaurants.

Known for...   Newcastle Brown Ale, Metro Centre, St James Park, Geordie Accent, River Tyne and Ant and Dec

Did you know...

  • Stephenson’s Rocket, which won the Rainhill Trials in 1829, was built in Newcastle. Its design set the standard for steam locomotives for a century and more.
  • The first public demonstration of the light-bulb was given by its inventor Joseph Swan on 3rd Feb 1879 at a lecture theatre in Newcastle, therefore the first public building in the world lit by electric light. In 1881 Mosley Street in Newcastle became the first street in the world to be illuminated by electric light.
  • Geordies are so called because the city was the only one in the North East that supported George II and closed its gates to the Jacobite army during the rebellion of 1745.
