Things to do in Malmesbury

Historic hilltop market town, famous for its Abbey and more recently Dyson's headquarters

Scenic and historic Wiltshire market town, perched on top of a small hill and surrounded by the River Avon. Popular with visitors who come to see the famous Abbey and stroll around the town.

Known for...   Malmesbury Abbey, Dyson, Market Cross, River Avon and Monk Eilmer

Did you know...

  • Malmesbury is on the site of an iron age fort and, according to the Guinness World Records, is the oldest borough in England being created around 880 AD by Alfred the Great.
  • Dyson is now the main employer and has its headquarters on the outskirts the town, with over 1500 people employed mostly in design as manufacturing has moved to Malaysia.
  • In 1010, a monk called Eilmer flew a primitive hang glider from a tower of the Abbey. He is reported to have flown over 200 yards before crash landing and breaking both his legs.
