Did you know...

  • Barking was an important fishing town, from the 14th century until the mid 19th century.
  • In 1878, the pleasure steamer Princess Alice sank in the River Thames at Barking, with over 800 passengers on board, after being struck by the iron ship Bywell Castle. Over 600 people died, which is the most civilian lives lost in a single incident in UK waters.
