Things to do in Swindon

Largest town in Wiltshire, with historical links to the railway industry and modern technology and motor industries. Are you looking for some new things to do in Swindon? We've got plenty of suggestions and new ideas for you across the town. Come and meet some local Swindonians and experience real Wiltshire hospitality.

With its origins as a small market town until the 19th century, Swindon is now the largest town in Wiltshire. Brunel's Great Western Railway arrived in 1840 and the town grew rapidly as the railway works developed. Modern industry and hi-tec companies have replaced the rail industry. There are plenty of large parks and open spaces throughout the town, while the beautiful Wiltshire countryside is right on your doorstep.

Known for...   Swindon Old Town, Great Western Railway, Honda, BMW, magic roundabout, Motorola, Intel, Nationwide Building Society, McArthur Glen Designer Outlet and Bodleian Library's book depository

Did you know...

  • The Bodleian Library's book depository is held in Swindon and is reputed to contain 153 miles of bookshelves.
  • Swindon is infamous for its roundabouts, the "Magic Roundabout" being the most well known, which is made up of 5 roundabouts around a central hub.
  • English Heritage and the Steam Railway Museum now occupy part of the old Great Western Railway works, developed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
