  • Southwark become an important transport route into London during Roman times, as it was at the southern end of the Roman London Bridge.
  • During the 16th century, Southwark became the entertainment district for London. In 1587, The Rose theatre opened and in 1599 the first of Shakespeare's Globe Theatres was built.
