  • Greenwich became the site of a royal palace in the 15th century, the Palace of Placentia, birthplace of several monarchs including Henry VIII and Elizabeth I.
  • The Royal Observatory in Greenwich, is the location of Greenwich Mean Time and longitude zero degrees, developed so that British mariners could calculate their longitude from the Greenwich meridian.
